Day 16…..Saturday.

Today we went to see you Grandma and Grandad. Your fathers parents. Your Grandfather has dementia which is a horrible condition and it has been getting a lot worse as the weeks and months have passed. Your Gran looks after him and tends to his every need, but it is getting more and more difficult for her to cope, and she needs some help to deal with everyday thing as the your Grandad’s condition deteriorates. Gran talks about the events of yesterday, when the police brought him home because he was lost and disoriented in the local supermarket. It was very distressing for her.

Grandad came into the kitchen while we where talking and showed us that his glasses had broken. The lens had fallen out, so your father had a look at them for him and soon had them fixed and Grandad returned to watching TV again. We continued to talk, and soon your father said that we would be going to see his brother and we would be helping him and his fiance move some things into their new house, but first we had something to tell her. He firmly told her to listen to me.

Your Gran was listening intently when I said ‘We are going to have a baby.’ She responded with smiles and hugs and kisses and told us how lovely our news was. We talked for quite a while about you and how we had just found out about you, how far along we were and that you are a little boy and all about your hernia and the amniocentesis. Your Gran has a lovely smile and she seems very happy for us both. I asked her what she thought she would like you to call her, she said ‘Gran’ just like your father had called her mother.

The conversation soon came back to your Grandad and soon it would be necessary for him to be looked after by professionals in a care home. Your Gran is very upset by this, feeling she would be letting him down, and failing him if she did not continue to look after him. We try to explain that this would not be true and that her well being was very important too, and her quality of life is starting to suffer as a consequence of having so much to cope with.

We left you Gran’s house and went to your Uncle’s new house, and while your father and Uncle took numerous trips to the old house to bring boxes and furniture back, nI helped with unpacking boxes and cleaning cupboards in the kitchen. All afternoon we talked about you and what will happen in the next few weeks. It was a lovely afternoon, but I can see your father is tired and his back is sore from lifting heavy boxes. We head home.

Day 17…..Sunday.

I headed back to my house mid morning as normal. It was a very uneventful day. I felt very tired and other than doing a few jobs I mostly veg out on the sofa.

I talk to you, and watch you kicking me and wonder what you will be like, what you will look like and what kind of person you will become. I am fascinated by you and I am getting more and more excited to meet you. Your Mummy loves you so very much.

I have an early dinner and an early night.

Day 18…..Monday.

Another uneventful day, but a busy day all the same. I am stunned at how tired I am getting, the simplest of things are a challenge and my brain feels like it has been taken over by some alien species. Surely this is not normal in pregnancy.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..Day 19,20,21…..Tuesday, Wednesday,Thursday.

The days pass slowly, and I feel like someone has stuck a bicycle pump up my bum and inflated me.I feel sure a pin poked in my tummy would have me whizzing around the room. My tummy has got so much bigger. Apparently, I now look pregnant, but I am very ‘neat’ and it is only when I am stood side ways on you can see how big my bump is. I know you are there though, I feel you moving all the time. Life feels normal, and I am looking after us as best I can, getting on with things and getting on with things for us, I am happy.

Day 22…..Friday…….St Valentines Day.

At last the last day of the working week and I am looking forward to not getting up early in the morning and sleeping in for as long as I like.

Everyone seems happy, the girls are getting flowers from partners, messages and cards from boyfriends and the occasional joke declaration of undying love from work colleagues.

I have a card and chocolates for your father, but I doubt he will be expecting anything, simply because I doubt he will have remembered the about the traditions of this day. Much to my surprise however, I receive a text message from him wishing me Happy Valentines day and telling me how much he loves me.

Once home I cook myself some diner and watch tv and then soak my body in a warm bath. Just as I am settled in to the bath, I hear the front door open and slam closed loudly. Your father has come over. He calls hello up the stairs and is greeted with a surprised ‘Hello, is that a burglar?’ I hear him just outside the bathroom door and his head pops round, and with a big grin he asks if I am in need of a back scrub. I get a big kiss and we chatter about our days this week. Your father went back down stairs and I can hear him in the kitchen. with my pj’s on I headed down to join him. He has made me a cup of tea, and on the dinning room table were flowers, chocolates, and a card, along with a very small bottle of wine. I was delighted by such a lovely though but the fact your father had come over had ment so much more. I promised to save the wine for a few weeks, after all it will not go off.

We talked all evening and slept well.
